ACTION is being taken against speeding in Marshgate, as the first Community Speedwatch event took place in the village recently.
Cornwall Councillor for the Tintagel division, Barry Jordan, (Conservative) recently attended a parish meeting with Conservative North Cornwall MP Scott Mann to listen to the concerns of local residents in regards to speeding.
After several months and working with Oliver Jones from CORMAC, the first Community Speedwatch was held in Marshgate on Friday, September 20 with some members of the community.
Cllr Jordan said: “I had asked Oliver Jones to carry out the speed check and it returned a lot of speeding which prompted me to work with the parishioners and the Otterham Parish Council to get the speedwatch in place.
“The legal requirements to enable prosecution for speeding state that the repeater signs must be no more than 300 metres apart where there are street lights and 250 metres apart on unlit roads. PCSO Mike Dodds worked very closely with us and Oliver Jones sorted out the distance between the signs, putting in two new signs.”
There was training in Camelford on Sunday, September 22 and now parishioners are able to continue the Community Speedwatch without a police presence. Cllr Jordan added: “This just goes to show that if we all work together we can make our roads safer to everyone. There has already been a serious accident in Marshgate and hopefully this will not happen again.”
