THE Lifton Cottage Garden Society and WI 37th Annual Village Show was held on the first Saturday in August in the Church Hall.

It proved to be the most successful show for many years with 50 exhibitors plus the primary school children’s entries totalled approximately 400. Following the difficult year weather-wise, the vegetables and flower entries were down but this was made up by the entries in the fruit, floral art, cookery, handicraft and photography classes. The children entered over 100 items, which included shoe box art, a button heart, T-shirt design, CD scratch art and a painted pebble and for secondary school children, any handicraft. The judges were quite impressed with the amount and standard of the exhibits.

The president, Mr Anthony Philips, introduced the cup presenter, Mr Stephen Greenhalgh who was presented with a buttonhole by Miss Izzey Voaden. Stephen then recited a poem which he had written about the trials and joys of competing in the show; he also spoke about his late mother, Jean, who for many years was chairman of the show committee and how much she had enjoyed entering the floral art classes and thanked the committee for naming one of the floral art cups in her memory. He then presented the cups.
