Two people, one of them a woman with a broken leg, were airlifted from a cliff near Morwenstow on Friday. An RAF rescue helicopter from RMB Chivenor was called out to Higher Sharpnose Point to assist the pair. The 66-year-old woman from Camelford, and an uninjured companion were taken to North Devon District Hospital. Christopher James from Bridgerule was out walking when he heard the distant rotors of the air ambulance approaching and followed the noise to the valley. He told the 'Post' that very low cloud around 1pm made visibility difficult, but luckily the sea mist lifted as things went on. By the time the helicopter arrived, an air ambulance was already at the scene, safely landed, and the two medics were looking after the lady with the broken leg. Mr James added: "The RAF were brought in to winch the

casualty and her partner safely out of the valley as a precaution. It would have been dangerous to climb with a stretcher case, up the slippery grass slopes. The RAF helicopter hovered for some time almost 'rock solid' to the spot and in a classic text book exercise successfully picked the lady and her walking partner to be whisked off to casualty. The air ambulance and ground ambulance crew acted quickly and safely to effect a fast rescue in a steep sided valley." Sgt Ryan Thomas, one of the crew members said: "Due to the location, we put her in a splint and airlifted her to the helicopter."
