AN UPDATE and background was presented to the Bude Community Network Panel, regarding Connect Bude, a group hoping to reconnect Bude and Holsworthy to the national rail network.
At the panel’s recent meeting, Richard Wolfenden-Brown was welcomed to the meeting, who went on to explain the background of the group, how it was formed and gave an outline of the group’s core objectives to reconnect Bude and Holsworthy to the rail network.
Following the group’s establishment, the meeting heard that Connect Bude already have a constitution, a bank account, core objectives in place and have held approximately seven meetings.
There is also work underway to develop a website for Connect Bude.
However, despite local support, the meeting heard that further support is needed and there is a need for money to provide campaigning and a feasibility study.
Mr Wolfenden-Brown, on behalf of the organisation, requested that thousands of people should try and support this initiative so progress can be made. The meeting heard that Scott Mann, the Conservative MP for North Cornwall, has given support.
Mr Wolfenden-Brown explained that the group needs to work with partners to ensure there is an integrated transport system and improve existing bus and rail links.
Once the website is running, it is hoped that the project will gain momentum, giving opportunity for people to pledge their support both financially and vocally.
It was explained that Devon County Council are supportive of this project, by designating funds and also allowing a representative to attend Connect Bude’s meetings.
The meeting heard that the Okehampton trial ‘has been received really well and hopefully will lead the way for this project’.
The panel thought that the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce should be behind the project, as it is ‘important to the people of North Cornwall’.
They also said that they hope for Cornwall Council to show support, with the possibility of inviting Geoff Brown, portfolio holder for transport, to the next community network panel meeting for further discussion.
