RESIDENTS in and around Launceston will be left going elsewhere for treatment after the town’s minor injury unit announced its closure for the day.
Launceston Minor Injury Unit has announced that it will not be open today (April 7) in order to ensure that larger units in the region remain open.
The news comes only a number of weeks after the Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust announced that the site would be returning to its full opening hours after the unit had been operating under a restricted opening schedule of only five days a week since July 2025.
Launceston Minor Injury Unit (MIU) has only been operating under these increased hours since Saturday, April 4. Alongside the MIU, the trust confirmed that the town’s x-ray services would be available Sunday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
Commenting on the news, hospital matron, Nicola Wilks said: “I am delighted to be able to open the minor injury unit seven days a week - and just in time for Easter too!
“Catherine Bailey, minor injury unit sister and team have worked hard to get our seven-day service returned with recruitment and staff development. Well done to our minor injury unit team!”
However, only three days later, the unit has announced that it will be closed for the day amid ‘staffing pressures’.
A spokesperson for the unit explained: “Launceston Minor Injury Unit is closed today, Tuesday, April 7. In line with our operational policy, we sometimes close smaller units to keep our larger and busier units open. We understand this is frustrating, but this is due to staffing pressures.”
Those in need of treatment at the minor injury unit are instead being guided to one of the other units within the area, including Bodmin, Liskeard and Stratton.
