CAMELFORD Town Councillor Lauren Rathbone will be embarking on the Jurassic Coast Mighty Hike in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support this month.
Lauren, who held a cake sale in Camelford on Saturday, May 25 to raise funds for the cause, will be taking on the challenging hike on Saturday, June 15 with her sister-in-law, Hazel, after losing her father-in-law, Allan Rathbone, to cancer in April.
The hike will take place along the breathtaking Jurassic Coast from Weymouth to Wareham, covering a total of 26 miles.
Lauren said: “We are doing this for Macmillan as we sadly lost my father-in-law in April to cancer, and so I wanted to do something to raise money and awareness.
“I have completed a few half marathons over the last five years and wanted something equally as challenging to do — so why not a marathon hike along some of the toughest parts of the British coastline?”
Lauren set a target of £250 to be raised — but has exceeded that already with her recent cake sale, held outside Enfield Park, raising just over £140, followed by additional donations.
She continued: “I would love to hit the £500 mark as I think it is a charity very close to everyone’s hearts and they do such an amazing job.
“I have been training for the hike by walking parts of the North Cornwall coast path, and have discovered a love for walking. Who wouldn’t when we live in such a beautiful part of the world!”
Lauren added: “It’s certainly going to be extremely challenging, but with my sister-in-law by my side, along with 1,500 other people, all doing it for the same cause, the emotions and sense of achievement on the day will get us through.”
