The Environment Agency has issued a yellow flood alert for the Upper River Tamar today (January 12).

It warns of the possibility of flooding in the areas of Bude, Helbridge, Bridgerule, Canworthy Water, Launceston, and Yeolmbridge areas.

A yellow weather warning warns people to ‘be prepared’ for the possibility of flooding.

In the flood alert, published on the Environment Agency website, the Environment Agency said: “Flooding is possible in this area. Monitor local water levels and weather conditions.

“Avoid using low-lying footpaths or entering areas prone to flooding. Start acting on your flood plan if you have one. The Environment Agency Flood Warning System has issued this message based on rising river or tidal levels”

The yellow flood alert comes after a night and morning of heavy rainfall across Cornwall, with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning for rain which is in place until 5 pm tonight.

The Environment Agency has also issued the following guidance on what to do in the event a flood alert is declared.

They say people in the affected areas should prepare a bag that includes medicines and insurance documents and check flood warnings, in case the alert escalates to a full warning.
