CAMELFORD Top Town Memory Cafe was on hand to show the public what they have been doing with their members over recent months.

The memory cafe welcomes people living with dementia or their carers on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at Camelford Hall. It offers people a chance to relax and have fun in a supportive environment while partaking in a number of different activities and enjoying a range of entertainment.

Jane Moore, who leads the memory cafe, was hoping for a successful day at Camelford Show, despite the blustery weather. She said: “It’s been brilliant so far — it’s running and we’re very resilient here at the memory cafe, we can cope with anything.”

The memory cafe will be taking part in BBC Music Day from September 5, helping Music Day reach as many people living with dementia as possible. This is just one of the 49 events under Purple Angel, with some taking place in parts of the world as far as India and America.

Jane also had a diary to show members of the public what the memory cafe have been up to recently, with highlights including a visit from X Factor finalist Dwayne AJ. Jane continued: “He was wonderful. We have one lady who, when he paid her some attention, she lit up for the rest of the day.”

The cafe welcomes a number of entertainers, and recently held a ‘doggy day’, welcoming a number of furry companions to sit with members and brighten their day, as well as a visit to the Bird of Prey Centre and a collaborative trip with Launceston Memory Cafe with a trip on the local steam train.

The cafe also tries to get involved with the community as much as possible, making Easter ceramics in the spring and also producing beautiful Christmas decorations for the annual Camelford Christmas breakfast, which people very often take away with them to place on the graves of their loved ones.

“All of this is really good for their wellbeing,” Jane said. “It’s really vital for people with dementia to socialise.

“Today, we’ve managed to talk to a lot of people here and getting noticed. We have a grant for the marquee, and with 26 members — both carers and people with dementia — I don’t think we’d have done all this today without the marquee.”

The memory cafe meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at Camelford Hall from 2pm to 4pm. For more information, call Jane on 01840 212780 or Jane Sleeman on 01840 211337.
