POLICE are appealing for information following a burglary at a property near Launceston last week, which saw items of great sentimental value stolen.

Siobhan Jeffery has asked for any information that may lead to the return of the items that were taken from her mother’s thatched cottage on Tuesday, July 4 at Langdon, near the Countryman Pub, on the B3254 Launceston to Bude road.

Among the jewellery taken was a half sovereign gold ring belonging to Siobhan’s late father.

Siobhan said her mother, who has lived there for 37 years, has never experienced such an incident.

Siobhan said: “Where they live it’s sort of unheard of. It’s quite a shock really. It’s on the main road.”

Police say the break-in occurred some time between 8.20am and 4.42pm, when Siobhan said her mother and mother’s partner had been at work.

On their return, they found the back door had been smashed with a rock and entry gained into the porch.

Siobhan added: “They couldn’t get any further through to the next door so they went round to the front and broke in through a window with a rock.

“They’ve gone through the house and taken quite a lot. They’ve taken jewellery and cash. They are quite brazen to have done that. We just never expected it.”

She said the more they have thought about it, they realise more has been taken, and her mother has written a list of what is missing.

This includes the half sovereign ring, Siobhan late father’s heavy link silver bracelet, Siobhan’s silver Christening bangle and her mother’s wedding and engagement rings — missing is a ladies’ sapphire and diamond ring, an antique diamond ring, an antique gold wedding ring with engraved pattern. The two antique rings are 120 and 150 years old.

Siobhan added: “They have been in the family for a long time.”

Various silver and gold necklaces and other bracelets were taken, a ladies’ gold watch, a large distinctive silver St Christopher’s medallion, and an old Cadbury’s tin containing pre-decimal coins and old foreign currency.

Siobhan’s mother’s partner was in the Navy, and his engraved medals are missing. These would have his name, Mark Phelan, on them. Mr Phelan’s father’s medals are also missing, and would be marked P Phelan.

Siobhan is hoping people can think back if they were driving in the area on Tuesday, July 4 and remember if they saw anything suspicious or noticed anything different.

She said: “Someone on one of the Facebook pages said they noticed a man walking up the road around 2.30pm, carrying a rucksack. They had noticed it as it’s a fast piece of road. It might be nothing but it’s unusual to see someone walking on that road. Maybe it’s a coincidence.”

Siobhan said they are happy to give a reward for any information that leads to the return of the missing items.

Anyone with information or CCTV in the area is asked to contact police on [email protected] or call 101 quoting reference CR/054582/17.
