CAMELFORD’S mayor, Kirsty Ferguson, used her casting vote against a proposal to object to plans for a mixed use property on Clease Road.

The application, for Chandlers Lodge, 13A Clease Road, seeks permission for the property to be of mixed use; majority dwelling house with the addition of bed and breakfast use for up to five bedrooms along with shared use of dining room, utility and office/study.

Discussing the plan, Cllr Sue Elford, who chairs the council’s planning committee, said: “It looks very nice but it’s access. It comes out onto the main road, that’s the only objection I have to it.”

Cllr Ferguson asked: “If it’s a bed and breakfast, where will the additional cars park?”

Access was also a concern to Cllr Andy Shaw, who noted that the access to the rear of the property is on a bend.

But Cllr Rob Rotchell said: “When it was a care facility, there was traffic flow.”

Cllr Shaw said there was the potential of 18 vehicle movements on the site, adding: “There’s an issue on that road generally.”

Cllr Ferguson added: “Having a bed and breakfast would be lovely.”

Cllr Peter Guesford said: “I’d rather see a building like that utilised. I think another bed and breakfast in the town would be useful.”

Cllr Shaw proposed objection on the grounds of vehicular access, and where the vehicles would be parked.

Cllr Elford seconded, four councillors voted in favour and four against, with one abstaining from the vote. Using her chairman’s casting vote, Cllr Ferguson voted against the proposal.

A second proposal to support the application was made by Cllr Guesford and seconded by Cllr Aaron Dawe. Six councillors voted in favour, three against and one abstained.

The final decision is expected to be made by Cornwall Council’s plans committee.
