Now that most people in the country are house-bound for the majority of the day, being allowed to leave only for essentials, or key work, many are resigned to only go out for one form of exercise per day.
This exercise should be done whilst exerting social distancing, with people being more than two metres apart, alone or with a member of the household. That in mind, Mayor of Bude, Cllr Bob Willingham has suggested for people to follow the same route around the Bude canal and cycle path, so that social distancing can be maintained across the entire route.
He explained that a lot of people were using the same route, but that they were having to cross paths and get close to each other. Therefore, he came up with a solution. He said: “A lot of people are using the Bude canal path and the cycle path to get their exercise and there are sections where it isn’t possible to pass each other and keep a social distance.
“I have no authority to suggest this as it is Cornwall Council land, but how about making it all one way to minimise the spread of the virus?”
His idea would be that walkers and runners will then all be traveling in the same direction so reducing interaction. Cyclists would have to stay on the cycle path.
Mayor Willingham continued: “I was given the idea by Jimmy Finn and everybody I have spoken to think it is a great idea. Perhaps we could mark the paths with chalk to indicate suggested direction.”
“There is no way to enforce this so if you disagree with the idea that’s your choice.”
