THE May Day celebrations in Lewannick proved to be ‘the most successful yet’, with many members of the community coming along to join in.
With over 20 years of hosting traditional Maypole dancing on the bank holiday Monday, this event has grown into a huge ‘fun day’, being supported by large crowds.
The committee, headed by Sarah Fry, Jenny Eno and Vicky Jones, work vigorously hard months in advance to fill marquees with local traders, and book entertainment for everyone to enjoy.
The day began with the Maymaids, organised by Gilly Taylor, who walked into the square, led by Mary the pony, who was beautifully decorated by Anita Bickle. The young dancers, taught by Sam Dinnis and Jenny Parnell, began the dancing.
Following this, the adult dancers, trained by Emma White, joined in, who also decorated the Maypole with a crown of flowers.
Various attractions kept everyone entertained, with cream teas by the church committee, barbecues by the Gardiner family, and hog roasts keeping everyone well fed, as well as The Archer Arms serving breakfasts and drinks, and providing music from Rudh and Dr Thuds Remedy.
Jenny Eno said: “It went amazingly well; we raised £1,900 for the Lewannick community, which we are now putting towards fitting community seating in the village green.
“This year has been the most successful yet; it is the 25th year of doing this, and it has grown and grown and grown into one of the biggest events in the village.”
The hardworking committee of David Eno, Larry Rowse, Lizzie Grant, Will and Rachel Pascoe, Nick Smith, Sharon Francome, Lesley Stacey, Bridget Thomas, Kevin Jasper, Maggie Parnell and Emma White have expressed thanks to everyone who helped and supported with the event.
The committee also appreciated the raffle prizes and supplies that were donated by local businesses, with a special thanks going to Horizon Plastics, who sponsored the popular inflatable Sweeper.
The event proved to be a great success, with £1,900 raised for the community, and with everyone having a very enjoyable time.
