Mary Newman’s cottage the oldest building in Saltash, and the former home of the wife of English explorer Sir Francis Drake, recently received a cheque for £1,600 from Tesco Callington’s community champion Carrie-ann Bailey and Groundwork South Co-ordinator Janice Phillips.

The money, which Groundwork administers on behalf of Tesco, is raised from the sale of re-usable carrier bags and goes to local community projects after completing a public voting round in-store by way of tokens received at the end of their shop.

The Grade II listed Elizabethan cottage, managed by the Tamar Valley Protection society, will use the money to maintain the knott garden, replace wood used on the raised beds and create a small pond ready for when the house opens to visitors again in 2019.
