MARETTA Robinson from North Petherwin has completed a relay across the English Channel to raise money for her daughter Isobel's forthcoming expedition to Ecuador with the Camps International charity.

The crossing, which started at 3am, was arduous and three other boats that were attempting the feat at the same time withdrew due to the adverse sea conditions.

The team Selkie were made up from members of the Devon and Cornwall Wild Swimmers, who had been planning this attempt for the last 18 months.

Maretta said monthly open water training, together with the weekly training sessions with Launceston Master Swimming Club at the Phoenix Leisure Centre, coached by John Rhodes, additional training at places like Bude sea pool and completing several outdoor open water swims including the gruelling River Dart 10km swim, all paid off.
