A man from Pembroke Dock has been told to pay compensation by magistrates in Haverfordwest after admitting a charge of stealing alcohol.

Twenty-one-year-old Brad Jack Harwood, of Elizabeth Court, appeared in court on Tuesday, to plead guilty to the theft of bottles of WKD and Desperado from Albion Stores in Pembroke Dock.

Prosecutor Ellie Morgan told magistrates that the defendant had been spotted on August 29, of last year, by a shop assistant on duty in the alcohol section.

"The assistant behind the counter could hear bottles clanging together, and when Mr. Harwood came to the till he simply paid for a bag of crisps," she explained to the court.

"The defendant was asked by the shop assistant what had happened to the bottles he had picked up, but he said that he'd put them back as they were too expensive."

However, CCTV viewed afterwards showed that Mr. Harwood had concealed the two bottles inside his jacket and the police were informed.

The defendant had been sentenced last year to a term of imprisonment for separate offences, the prosecutor told the court.

Mr. Harwood's solicitor, Mr. Matt Greenish, said that his client was dependant on alcohol and other substance misuse at the time of the offence, but since he had left prison he had made efforts to change his life around and was continuing to comply with a probation service order.

The court was told that Mr. Harwood owed just short of £2,500 in fines and compensation claims.

He was told by magistrates to pay £6.88 in compensation to the store he stole from, and also £85 costs, which were to be added to his oustanding fines.
