LAUNCESTON was thriving on Friday evening for the annual late night Christmas shopping event.
Launceston Chamber of Commerce chairperson, Irena Jordi-Slater, was pleased with how the evening went, with the area being ‘nice and busy’ throughout the night. There were just a few cancelations due to cold, wintry weather and the flu.
The procession boasted the famous shire horses, lovely lanterns and the fantastic college samba band.
Irena said: “Town was busy, the atmosphere lovely. I noticed the rides were non-stop busy — the reindeer rodeo being a big hit. Spangles the Clown attracted many children and entertained the crowd. I was so pleased to have two performers from Swamp Circus with their enchanting fire acts. They shared with me afterwards that this was the best late night shopping event they have ever been to.”
It was nicely laid out in town, with so much going on for everyone. The children in the choir from St Joseph’s School sang, there was a little dance performance with Stephanie’s dance group, the Junk Band from St Stephen’s School played outside Lokaroma, Olaf the snowman amused many people, the town band played carols and the Launceston Pop Choir entertained the crowds with carols.
Snowflakes decorated by the children from St Stephen’s, St Catherine’s and Windmill Schools were also on display in one gazebo. The Market Arcade was busy with the Santa’s Grotto and the little Christmas market.
The 50/50 raffle draw was at 8.10pm, with the winner being Helen Colville.
Irena added: “All in all, it was a good turnout — and we were so lucky with the weather!
“I would like to thank everyone who participated, helped with the set up, road closures and the tidy up. Merry Christmas to everyone.”
