THE pitch and putt in Bude should be classed as part of the heritage and culture of the town and not just another property

The call was made at a meeting of Bude-Stratton?Town Council’s heritage and culture committee in the Parkhouse Centre last night.

During a section on the agenda that allows 15 minutes for electors to talk, one member of the public asked for the pitch and putt to be discussed by the heritage and culture committee in future instead of the properties committee.

She said: “I have been coming to Bude for many years, and now I live here. I believe that, personally, the building is part of the heritage of Bude, a great community venue for Bude and we should be preserving the actual building itself. It’s more than just another building.

“There is a lot of potential on the grass for lawn tennis and there’s been quite a bit of interest with getting that going, which would be another thing to attract people to it.”

Speaking at his first meeting as a member of the committee, Cllr Paul Tilzey pointed out that when the proposal was put forward to allow a prospective tenant potentially to develop the building itself, as well as the tennis court area, it was the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) that turned down the plans, not the town council.

As the pitch and putt was not an item on the committee’s agenda, town clerk Donna James offered some advice to the member of the public on how enquiries can be taken forward.

She said it is up to the council if it feels an issue is relevant for a different committee to discuss, and the best way to get the wheels in motion would be to write a letter to her, as the town clerk, about any matter.

Once the letter had been read by the clerk she would distribute copies of it to the relevant councillors.
