A BIG turnout at Hurdon Way Residents’ Association litter pick saw volunteers clearing up a larger area than ever before.

Helpers cleared the estate of rubbish and also picked up litter dumped along Hurdon Road and next to Launceston Hospital and Launceston College on Sunday, September 16.

The association organises regular clean-ups and volunteers are treated to a hot drink and butty at Proper Ansome Café afterwards.

Jade Farrington, Cornwall Councillor for Launceston South, said: “It was fantastic to see people coming from other areas of the town and giving up their Sunday morning to do something for the community.

“There were helpers from Stourscombe, Lanstephan, Newport and St Johns who all wanted to see a tidier Launceston.”

Volunteers of all ages came to support the event, with six-month-old Jessica Denney joining in her second litter pick, having already helped out on Dunheved Road.

Cornwall Council spends over £5-million every year on street cleaning, utilising an army of over 200 workers who clean more than 40,000 miles each year.

Despite this, the last residents’ survey showed that 23% of people in Cornwall are not happy about how clean their streets are. To tackle this, Cornwall Council has launched a new anti-litter campaign calling for people to join a movement of people and sign a pledge to make a #LitterlessCornwall.

The council wants people to bag and bin their rubbish or take it home, and only leave their footprints behind.
