PEOPLE may have noticed the silhouettes being placed around Lifton recently — these were brought together for a special service on Saturday, November 10, in St Mary’s Church, to commemorate the fallen of the village in time for the centenary of the end of the First World War.

Elizabeth Brown, Parochial Church Secretary, organised the event after successful being awarded ten commemorative silhouettes from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust.

She said: “I have asked local businesses to sponsor a further five silhouettes so that we have one for each of the 15 men named on our village war memorial.”

These silhouettes have been placed around the village in the week leading up to Remembrance Sunday. They are now situated in places such as the chapel, school, surgery, village shop, pubs etc.  The silhouettes were brought together for the ‘There but Not There’ Lifton remembers’ event, held on Saturday, November 10, from 2.30pm to 4.30pm in St Mary’s Church.

Elizabeth said: “The event is to bring the community together with service personnel past and present to remember and to think about the armed forces today.

“The refreshments are being provided by the WI and there will be a display with information and pictures about the local men who went to war.”

The event is free to attend but any donations will be given to the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust.

The Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust, which has supplied the village with the 15 silhouettes, makes awards and grants to projects that support the armed forces community. For more information about their work visit www.covenantfund.org.uk
