Lifton Strawberry Fields Farm Shop was awarded a gold certificate at the Devon County Flower Show on Thursday. Their winning stand entitled 'Dig for Victory,' was depicting the Second World War era, and reflected the time when flowers were depleted as the growing of edible crops to feed the nation was a necessity. Full of its usual quirky humour, the scarecrows and staff were dressed as land girls and the men as British army officers. "We are so proud of this award," Jo Mounce said. "We had strong competition against the amazing floral displays, but our theme couldn't have been better for us, as growing fruit and vegetables is what we know and do daily. It has been fascinating learning about those grim years and we are proud of the way our forefathers pulled together for the common good to feed the nation." Certainly, the main thing which always catch the public's eye at shows like this, are the famous Lifton scarecrows. Every one its own character, very often humorous, but even sometimes lifelike and you can catch yourself accidently passing the time of day without realising it is actually a scarecrow! Jo said: "We have been making scarecrows now for twenty years to guard the strawberry crops and have people coming every year eager to find out what the theme is." They have, over the years made all manner of groups such as the Spice Girls, Disney characters, and people from all round the world. This year's characters are from the Wizard of Oz and in the new landscaped garden will be the Mad Hatters' Tea Party. So help them to follow the yellow brick road, round to the garden where they will celebrate their gold award with a tea party amongst the friendly scarecrows, and you will all be made to feel very welcome by the fancy dressed staff.
