A SENIOR RNLI lifeguard is attempting what few would dare off of the coast of Bude. Simulating a man overboard scenario, Rory Sacree started his challenge yesterday, to spend 24 hours alone in the Atlantic Ocean, from 6pm on the Wednesday to 6pm on the Thursday. Rory will be a kilometre offshore, but will keep in touch with his well-wishers on land via a diary cam. He said: "I came up with the 'Float4life' challenge because I wanted do something original, adventurous, and relevant to the two causes I aim to raise awareness and money for. Floating on my back at sea for 24 hours is not going to be easy. The cold, seasickness, dehydration and simply floating all alone at night are all going to play a part in the adventure. I'm very excited to see how it will be!" An experienced surfer and water sports enthusiast, Rory has lifeguarded the Bude beaches for the last 13 years. Recently he has spent his winters teaching lifeguarding skills to Senegalese and Gambian lifeguards in West Africa, where the lack of lifesaving resources and basic training are responsible for needless deaths every year.
