THE ‘Library Lions’ group at Holsworthy Library have been inspired by their latest book and are collecting items for local foodbanks as a result.
The Library Lions recently read a book called ‘Boy at the Back of the Class’ by Onjai Q Rauf. The story follows a group of children who befriend and help a Syrian refugee boy who joins their class. Based upon themes of acceptance and kindness that are explored well in the book, the Library Lions have launched their own Christmas appeal to help people who use local foodbanks.
Helen Dagger, first assistant at Holsworthy Library, said: “I was so pleased by how the book inspired the children to make a positive difference to the lives of others. They worked together beautifully and were really keen to do something to help. I really hope people respond, as the children put so much effort into their appeal.”
She added: “I was really impressed by the Boy at the Back of the Class and feel strongly that it is a story most children should read. It deals with acceptance and kindness so beautifully and in a way that children can relate to.”
The children have designed their own posters for the appeal and have already started collecting items themselves.
Helen said: “We have set up two collection points in the library. One in the adult section and one in the children’s section. We hope to collect food and toiletries for Holsworthy Foodbank and food, toiletries, toys, games, sweets, stationary and books for Bude Foodbank.”
For more information or to donate items pop into the library during opening hours.
