VOTERS in St Teath and St Breward have elected a new Cornwall Councillor, with North Cornwall Liberal Democrats making it a ‘three out of three’ success.
There was success for the Liberal Democrats as their candidate, Dominic Churton Fairman, received 620 votes and was elected as the division’s new Cornwall Councillor after results of the by-election were announced on Friday, July 15.
Cllr Fairman was elected to the Cornwall Council ward of St Teath and St Breward after receiving a high number of votes, with the Independent candidate William Kitto from St Teath coming in second with 242 votes to Cllr Fairman’s 620.
The win has meant that the Liberal Democrats now have 18 out of the 21 Cornwall Councillors in the North Cornwall constituency area — with the Independents having two and the Conservatives having one.
Chair of North Cornwall Liberal Democrats, John Lamb, said: “Just over 12 months ago, people had written us off. Since then, we have won victory after victory after victory.
“What’s more, over 17,000 people have joined the Liberal Democrats in that time meaning and our membership is at highest it has been for over a decade.”
The by-election was caused by the resignation of the long-standing Independent Councillor John Lugg.
Liberal Democrat candidate Cllr Fairman said on his recent election win: “I am thrilled, honoured and humbled in equal measures to be elected to represent the parishes of Advent, Michaelstow, St Breward and St Teath – including Delabole – on Cornwall Council.
“The campaign enabled me to meet with hundreds of local residents and I am keen to make sure that their voices and concerns are listened to at County Hall.”
He told the Post that he attended the St Teath and Delabole Parish Council meeting on Monday, and some of the issues he had in his in-tray that he is looking to follow up are traffic calming outside the school in St Teath and the loss of the Lollipop Lady in Delabole.
He also attended his first full Council meeting at County Hall on Tuesday morning.
Former Liberal Democrat MP for North Cornwall, Dan Rogerson said: “This is a fantastic result. The Liberal Democrats have made it three out of three in the Cornwall Council by-elections that have taken place in North Cornwall since last year’s general election. And we have no intention of slowing down any time soon.”
