MEMBERS of a knitting group have been busy creating a four foot soldier ahead of Remembrance Sunday, and will be raising money for the Royal British Legion and their local church.

The Lewannick Knit and Natter group knitted the poppies that adorn ‘Tommy’ the soldier — including white poppies representing peace.

Knitted poppies can be bought from Lewannick Church, with money raised being split between the Royal British Legion and church funds.

Around the outside edge of Tommy the soldier are pictures detailing various conflicts, and there is paper for anyone who wishes to leave messages in memory of loved ones involved in conflict. They will be remembered on Remembrance Sunday and at service in church.

The Knit and Natter group has previously knitted daffodils in aid of Marie Curie, and are planning to hold another Christmas tree festival this year. As well as fundraising for charity, the knitters raise funds for the church.

Joy Wadge, a member of the Knit and Natter group, said: “We do need better facilities in the church — there’s no toilet and no proper kitchen. The funds we raise are to improve the church and along the way we do it for charity as well.”
