VISITORS to Launceston Rugby Club's ground stepped back in time over the weekend as members of the Sealed Knot re-enacted the Battle of Polson Bridge.

In April 1642, the English Parliamentary Army under Major-General George Chudleigh attacked the Cornish forces of Royalist Sir Ralph Hopton at Polson during the Civil War battle, and were forced to retreat.

This re-enactment of this battle — with cannon fire and muskets — was a big crowd puller over the two day event.

Visitors were also able to walk among the living history camp to find out more about what it was like to live during the English Civil War.

There was also a beer festival and hot food available.

It was the first time the battle has taken place at Polson and many have asked for it to become an annual event.

On the event's Facebook page, Paul Reid said: "Many thanks to Launceston Rugby Club for making us so welcome and providing one of the best beer 'tents' and battle venues we've seen in years.

"I've had nothing but happy and positive feedback from the Sealed Knotters who were there. Several have said that it was the best event they have attended so far this year, or in some cases, for a few years. Anyone who missed it, missed out!"
