Sutcombe villagers turned out in force on Tuesday morning to rally around their beleaguered post office, which the Post Office Network has allocated for closure. Residents held up placards, signs and posters protesting against the closure of Sutcombe, the only community facility for three miles around. Sharon Lee, whose mother is the sub postmistress at Sutcombe, said they had received a lot of support since the proposed closure was announced. She said it would "be a shame" if the post office was to close as many residents without transport relied on the service. With no public transport in the village, Sharon said: "People that can't drive will have to rely on someone else. It's taking away their independence." SEE the Cornish & Devon Post Series for reaction from throughout the district to the plan for closures — on sale now — including, St Giles, Lewannick, and Sutcombe. In next week's 'Post' (June 5), reports and pictures from St Giles and Ashwater, where the protest is gaining momentum.
