ONCE the winter conditions had temporarily disappeared Holsworthy Golf Club Ladies obviously 'thawt' that scoring would be high for their yellow ball competition but with little or no roll even for the big hitters it was not so. However, they all stuck to their task particularly Carole Baker, Hilary Dorren and Ann Denton whose 65pts was good enough to take first place with Ely Walmsley, Sue Watters and Gwen Adams second 64pts and third Sue Griffiths, Jan Bostock and Pauline Bezzant 51pts.
AJ's Professional's Sweep, a Texas Scramble, once again had Phil Heal exhibiting his prowess as in company with Rob Dunn and Bob Demott their nett medal score of 64.3 gave them top spot and the money.
The heavens opened and gale force winds prevailed however the Veterans turned out for the medal which was also round five in the Winter Eclectic competition an although there were some who didn't complete the 18 holes there were others who took on the elements and improved their eclectic scores.
John Masters 68 gave him top spot in Division One with Ray Holness and Bob Gelder second and third respectively both having nett 69s. In Division Two Dave Voller 70, Graham Makin 73 and Bob Bentham 74 were the top three.
Syd Pearce did not play due to injury but nevertheless his nett 50 keeps him top of the Division one Eclectic table with Des Best 52, Chris Woolley, Ray Holness and Bob Gelder 53s pressing Syd close. As for Division Two Veterans vice-captain Albert Taylor leads the way with nett 50, second being Graham Martin 53 and third Simon Lambrechts 54.
The foregoing report on the Veterans Section's activities is illustrative of the keeness and enthusiastic approach that the senior members of the club have for golf and for the club itself. For aside from the on course activities they are always ready, willing and able to assist whenever they can behind the scenes.
Having gone from strength to strength from the late 1980s when to produce a team of 12 necessitated including a lady or two — to the present day when it is not uncommon to have 60 turning out on Thursday mornings.
And for all this the section owes its beginnings to Len Yelland. Len got together a few of the old and bold and commenced to organise the weekly competitions taking over the captaincy. However, after two years Len succumbed to injury and ceased playing, his vice-captain Gordon Dimbleby taking over the reins adding to what Len started which has set the standard for almost 20 years.
So much is owed to the Veterans to Len Yelland, who sadly passed away recently, gone but most certainly not forgotten
