A NORTH CORNWALL leisure centre’s pool has re-opened after an enforced closure.
The swimming pool at community operated Launceston Leisure Centre had been closed for the entirety of the morning of April 2 due to a technical fault.
However, after an inspection by an engineer, the pool was declared safe to re-open at 12pm.
At the time of closure, a spokesperson for the centre said: “You may not know that someone has to go in to check the pool every day, even when we’re closed, including Easter & Christmas Day!
“Unfortunately on inspection on April 1, it appears to have had a bit of a hiccup since the checks & tests on Easter Sunday.
“These have been dealt with, but as a precaution the pool will be closed tomorrow morning to double check that the problem is resolved.
“All the morning sessions on Tuesday 2nd April are cancelled.”
In an update at 12pm, the leisure centre confirmed it had reopened, and while there was a problem that still needed resolving, it was safe to open.
The latest announcement of requiring to close attracted a smattering of criticism from those it affected. In response to these comments, the spokesperson for the leisure centre explained why it had faced recent issues.
They said: “Unfortunately our pool plant equipment is getting older and more susceptible to breakdowns, and on occasion even power cuts can have a knock on effect on the chlorine levels in the water.
“We are really appreciative of the support of the community whilst we are working to improve the facilities for everyone. Without the members there would be no leisure centre.
“We hope that we will soon have access to the dilapidation funding and be able to start fixing the building and replace aging equipment.
“The pool is by far the most expensive and challenging aspect regarding day to day staffing and maintenance.
“We will keep everyone updated as soon as the pool is ready to open again. The rest of the centre is unaffected and will be open as usual.”
