LAUNCESTON’S Youth Council has written a letter seeking ‘reassurance that the future of Phoenix Leisure Centre is secure’.
Confirming the wording of a letter regarding the leisure centre was on the agenda of the Youth Council meeting, which was held on the afternoon of November 8.
The Youth Council’s meeting was held before the announcement that a company called GLL has been awarded the tender to provide leisure centres, including the Phoenix Leisure Centre, and other leisure facilities, currently owned and maintained by Cornwall Council, from next April.
The Youth Council has sent a letter to Cornwall Council’s cabinet member for resources, Adam Paynter, his fellow Liberal Democrat Cornwall Councillors for Launceston and Launceston South Gemma Massey and Jade Farrington, Cornwall Council’s portfolio holder for young people Andrew Wallis, and to North Cornwall Conservative MP Scott Mann.
The letter says “Please provide reassurance that the future of Phoenix Leisure Centre is secure. Phoenix Leisure Centre is important to us and other young people in the town.
“Although we live in a county with the most coastline in the country, access to the seaside is limited. When we are able to enjoy our Cornish beaches it is important we are equipped to do so safely.”
