WORK expected to be carried out to a bridge near Launceston, is a 'waste of money' according to a resident of the town.
Cornwall Council has recently carried out preliminary tests to Landlake Bridge, Launceston.
Bob Ball of Penworth Close, Launceston, understands that the council plans to strengthen the bridge and allow it to cater for vehicles weighing 40 tonnes. But he feels the money should be spent on another neighbouring bridge which needs repairing.
"It [Landlake Bridge] spans 12ft wide, 5ft across two arches with no support in the middle," he said. "They want to remove the granite blocks and put in steel girders which have a life of 20 years. The logical thing would be to have 7.5 tonne weight limit at each end instead of spending thousands of pounds of a bridge so small.
"At any time you could only have half a lorry on the bridge and never will 40 tonnes be imposed on it."
