THE sound of music has persuaded Launceston's new Mayor, Cllr Paul O'Brien, to make Launceston Town Band his chosen charity during his year of office.

The Mayor put forward the idea of nominating a charity to support — as in other towns and cities — and has received the backing of his colleagues.

He explained that when he was Deputy Mayor last year, he stood in for the then mayor (Cllr Eric Chapman) at the annual band dinner at Trethorne.

"There were all ages, but I was most impressed by the high proportion of youngsters. That really surprised me and I was genuinely honoured to go there."

One of the major events of the year will be an Open Garden at the home of the Mayor and the Mayoress, Mrs Rosemary O'Brien, on Sunday, August 30, in aid of Arthritis Research, when the town band will play.

The Mayor said it was likely to be more like an open garden and gardeny party combined, from 2pm to 4 pm.
