SEVERAL of the Barefoot Games young volunteers attended the Launceston Town Council meeting in the Guildhall last Friday evening (May 20).
They went along to propose some street art ideas as part of their mission to jazz up the town. The bus shelter, the coach park and a concrete wall on Zig Zag path were highlighted as areas that could be transformed into works of art for all to enjoy.
Several of the town councillors including new Mayor Rob Tremain offered words of support for the group of young volunteers, and the town council voted to approve all the proposed street art projects.
One of the co-ordinators, Ben Robbins said: "We are very pleased to have the support of our town council, they have been really helpful and responsive, there are so many ways we can improve the town for all if we all work together. These young people have a huge amount to offer this community, they are the future."
Barefoot Games is a volunteer group run through the Eden Project that helps young people connect with their environment and engage with their community through volunteering, the group was responsible for 'Pisky Piran and the Youth Explosion'; the St Piran's Day celebrations in the Town Hall; 'Green Fingered Saturday' — when the group transformed the garden behind the old rectory building in the town centre and 'The People's Art Auction' which raised £4,500 for the Cornish charity ShelterBox as a response to the recent Japanese disaster.
The group meet weekly and have more events planned.
