LAUNCESTON Town Council will only support the installation of CCTV in the town if it is "a genuine financial partnership."
At last month's meeting of the full council, Deputy Mayor Cllr Paul O'Brien spoke in support of installing CCTV in the town and the benefits it would bring.
However, after discussing issues such as ownership of the scheme, civil liberties and running costs, it was also mentioned that the scheme would only cover a small section of the town and many troublesome areas would not be covered.
Councillors agreed that they could only support the scheme if it was a genuine financial partnership. If substantial funding comes from other sources then the council would provide the balance.
It was also agreed that the Town Clerk, Rita Skinner, would write to the Chamber of Commerce, Forum and local and regional police to ask for greater financial input and commitment to a real partnership.
