LAUNCESTON Town Council has expressed thanks to Brian Keighley — a Launceston Town Councillor— for all the work he has put into finding a solution for Launceston Post Office.
At the Launceston Town Council meeting held on Tuesday, February 16, Mayor of Launceston Cllr Paul O'Brien gave an update of the situation of Launceston Post Office. He said: "One of our colleagues has done a great amount of work to find a solution or alternative for Launceston Post Office's premises and post master."
Cllr O'Brien explained that Cllr Keighley, had been 75 per cent successful in finding a new post master, however the deal collapsed as the individual said that it was a too demanding role. But, he was still trying to indicate potential bargainings.
Cllr O'Brien said a shop keeper was willing to vacate their premises in the town so the Post Office could remain in the town centre. There had also been talks that a new person was in the frame considering to take on the franchise.
Cllr O'Brien explained: "It is a scene that changes on a daily basis. The publicity has concentrated more minds on the process and more people are trying to get involved.
"I am no more pessimistic than I was at the last meeting."
At the meeting, the council explained that they could not be directly involved with the Post Office situation and Cllr Keighley was carrying out negotiations on behalf of the town and keeping Cllr O'Brien and the rest of the council updated.
Cllr O'Brien expressed: "The council cannot play an active part as it is a commercial decision for those that take on the franchise and those involved.
"I am wary due to a commercial transaction, even if we had the money to support the Post Office we wouldn't legally be able to do it."
Cllr Connie Geach commented: "The town council doesn't support the move to Newport and proposes no support of the Post Office services moving out of the town."
Cllr Colin Warne added: "The town council whole heartily supports the Post Office in the town and supports it staying."
Cllr Jacki Ellis-Martin said: "Those that use Newport regularly would be delighted for a Newport Post Office."
It was explained that the Post Office has until April 1 to find an alternative solution, however, this could be extended if "the wheels were in motion," said Cllr Brian Hogan.
Cllr Geach said: "It is a great concern if negotiations cannot be arranged before April 1."
⦁An open meeting regarding the proposed Post Office closure is being held today (Wednesday, February 24) at 4pm in the White Hart, Launceston.
