LOCAL students have been channelling their inner Joe Marler at a recent rugby tournament.
Children from a number of schools came together recently to show off their sportsmanship, enthusiasm and of course, their rugby-playing talent.
Among the eleven schools in attendance was Launceston’s Windmill Hill Academy, fielding nine talented players from Year 5 to proudly represent their school.
With the winter weather in full force, despite the sunny yet chilly and very muddy conditions, the team’s enthusiasm never wavered.
Abby Bassett, headteacher at Windmill Hill Academy has praised the students efforts, describing their determination as tireless.
Commenting on the event, she said: “From the first whistle, the players demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship, resilience, and a strong desire to learn and apply new skills. With each match, their confidence grew, strategies sharpened, and determination soared. Their teamwork was outstanding—they supported one another, never gave up, and worked tirelessly throughout the day.”
Following a long day of hard work, teamwork and sportsmanship, it was finally time to crown a winner, and having given everything during the competition, the team were able to hold their heads up high, taking home fourth place.
With such a high level of play and some impressive teams, the school’s representatives could take pride in their efforts, meaning that out of 11 teams in total, the Windmill Hill contingent missed out on a podium finish by only a single point.
As well as some brilliant sporting play, the students have also been praised for their behaviour during the event, with Mrs Bassett describing the group as ‘brilliant ambassadors’ for their school.
She continued: “The pupils’ behaviour was exemplary, making them brilliant ambassadors for Windmill Hill Academy.
“A huge well done to Year 5 for their hard work and dedication!”
