FOOTBALL clubs, the police and spaceports have all welcomed students from North Cornwall recently, as pupils ventured into the world of work as part of 2025’s work experience programme.

Launceston College, part of Athena Learning Trust, is celebrating the success of its 2025 work experience programme, which ran from Monday, June 30 to Friday, July 4, and saw students in Year 10 and Year 12 gain invaluable insights into a wide range of industries.

The week provided students with the opportunity to step into professional environments, build confidence, and explore potential career paths, providing experiences that will play a vital role in shaping their futures.

Students ventured far and wide for a variety of exciting work experience opportunities. Standout placements for Year 10 included roles secured through competitive application processes, demonstrating the ambition and determination of the students involved.

These included: Army, Royal Navy, and Royal Air Force – offering first-hand experience of disciplined and demanding careers; Police placements– where students observed front-line services and community engagement; Cardiology at Derriford Hospital – a unique look into the world of medical diagnostics and patient care; InFocus Charity – leading drumming workshops to support individuals with visual impairments and complex needs; Cornwall FA and Plymouth Argyle FC – providing experience in coaching, event management, and sports development; and Hitech GP – a rare opportunity to work with a leading British motor racing team.

As well as Year 10 enjoying some memorable placements, students in Year 12 also got an insight into a variety of exciting industries, with pupils making the most of high-profile placements, including: MBDA – supporting projects related to military capability and engineering; SaxaVord Space Port – gaining insight into the future of UK space innovation; and York City Football Club – exploring professional football management and operations.

A spokesperson from Athena Learning Trust added: “Throughout the week, students demonstrated maturity, professionalism, and enthusiasm, impressing employers across all sectors. Feedback highlighted their curiosity, work ethic, and willingness to learn.”

The trust believes that the school’s approach to work experience gives students ownership of the process.

The spokesperson continued: “The school’s structured approach to work experience enabled students to take ownership of the process, from securing placements to logging essential information. The careers team, parents, and staff all played key roles in supporting students throughout.

“Launceston College remains committed to providing meaningful, future-focused opportunities that prepare students for the next steps in education, employment, or training.”

Mr Matthew Thompson, principal at Launceston College, has praised students for their enthusiasm during their placements and believes these opportunities serve as a great way to support young people in their search for the right career for them.

He said: "We are incredibly proud of the way our students approached their work experience placements. Whether supporting medical teams, coaching sports, or engaging with defence and aerospace professionals, they represented Launceston College with pride and purpose.

“These real-world experiences are vital in helping our young people understand the many exciting pathways available to them, and this year’s programme has been one of our most successful yet."
