LAUNCESTON Steam Railway has made it into the local paper — in India!

Jonathan Mann, director of Launceston Steam Railway, said: “As readers will probably be aware, the Launceston Steam Railway has been hosting a locomotive from the world famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.

“However, recently the tables were turned slightly, when the special Darjeeling Society Gala that was held at Launceston station made the newspaper in Siliguri, one of the largest and fastest growing cities in East India.”

Siliguri was the Darjeeling Railway’s original terminus, although the line was later extended to meet with the mainline railway at New Jalpaiguri.

The visit of locomotive 19B — the ‘B’ referring to the class of locomotive — has been extremely popular, drawing many people into the town to see this piece of history in action.
