CHECKS are being stepped up in North and East Cornwall in a bid to ensure that haulage vehicles in the area are complying with legislation.
Officers from Launceston Roads Policing Unit are to carry out the checks to monitor vehicles either towing machinery or moving machinery on trailers.
The move follows an increase in reports that agricultural tractors and dual-purpose vehicles are towing large plant machinery on low-load trailers.
The checks will make sure that drivers and companies are complying with the necessary legislation regarding drivers' hours, operators' licensing, construction and use, and fuel.
Officers will ascertain the purpose of use for the vehicle and will make checks to ensure that it has the correct vehicle excise payment and the right type of fuel. Where necessary, the production of drivers' hours records and operators licence details will also be required. Vehicles will also be checked for weight.
Drivers should ensure that they have the correct classification on their licence prior to towing. Partner agencies VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency) and HM Revenue and Customs will become involved when necessary.
