A Launceston resident is hoping that a new petition will get the ball rolling in the creation of a ‘splash pad’ for the town.
A splash pad is a recreation area, often situated within public parks or other community spaces, which is designated for water play without the need for a lifeguard. Areas often have little to no standing water, meaning the space remains safe for young people to enjoy in hot weather.
Commenting on the idea, she said: “Launceston is a growing community with many young families, yet there is currently no local splash pad for children to enjoy during the warmer months. Families often have to travel considerable distances to access similar facilities, making them inaccessible for many residents.”
Fountaineers, an organisation which designs these spaces, explained: “Splash Pads, also known as Splash Parks, bring the excitement and adventure of water play to play parks and back gardens wherever you are. Water splash pads are automatic, interactive aquatic play areas for children of all ages. They are designed to use water to spray, splash and soak people of all ages and abilities in a safe and stimulating environment.”
With towns across the county increasingly looking for ways to occupy young people, Victoria suggests that these spaces are not only entertaining but also inclusive.
She said: “A splash pad in one of Launceston's local parks would be a safe, inclusive, and environmentally friendly recreational option. Splash pads are designed to be accessible for children of all ages and abilities, promoting a sense of inclusivity and community. Additionally, utilising water-saving technology, modern splash pads can be both sustainable and cost-effective, minimising their impact on the environment while maximising fun.”
And Victoria isn’t the only one who believes this. Fountaineers has suggested that splash pads are an accessible and durable way to provide entertainment.
The company explained: “Water play areas represent a cost-effective and innovative way to provide safe and enjoyable entertainment to families in the outdoor environment. They’re also a durable and practical option, meaning they’ll last a very long time without the need for high maintenance!”
“Bringing a splash pad to Launceston would provide easy access to an important recreational facility right in our local community, ensuring that families can enjoy quality time without the burden of travel,” she said. “Furthermore, it would serve as an economic boost, attracting visitors from nearby areas and enhancing local businesses.
“We call on Cornwall Council to recognise this opportunity to enhance our community's quality of life and take actionable steps towards installing a splash pad in Launceston.”
