NOMINATIONS for Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Launceston for 2009/10 were received at a meeting of the town council on Tuesday, March 17.
Cllrs Tony Sandercock, Graham Facks-Martin and Rob Tremain were nominated for the position of Mayor. However, after thanking their proposers, the three men said they were unable to take up the role.
Cllr Pam Davey proposed Deputy Mayor Cllr Paul O'Brien for Mayor, which was seconded by Cllr Connie Geach.
Having been elected as Mayor Designate Cllr O'Brien said he would do everything he could "to uphold the traditions of the town and this council." With the experience of fellow councillors "to rely on and to give me advice," Cllr O'Brien said he was "half way there."
Cllr Mary Williams nominated Rob Tremain for Deputy Mayor which was quickly seconded.
The Mayor, Cllr Eric Chapman nominated Cllr Brian Hogan for Deputy Mayor. Although saying it was a "terrific honour" Cllr Hogan said that as he worked full time he felt he "wouldn't be able to do the job properly."
Therefore Cllr Tremain was elected as Deputy Mayor Designate.
