The Launceston Lions Club has received a share of £100,000 from the Lions Clubs Foundation of the British Isles. Lions Clubs across the British Isles have benefited from a special fund launched to support local communities during the COVID-19 crisis.
Launceston Lions Club will utilise the grant of £500 they received to support the Launceston Foodbank and the Cornwall Blood Bikers at this critical time.
The Launceston Foodbank, which members support with service are desperately short of basic food supplies, as well as personal hygiene equipment such as soap, shampoo and washing powder.
Therefore, the Lions Club have donated requested items to this much needed facility.
The Cornwall Blood Bikers rely on donations to operate.
These are volunteers who transport urgent blood and samples to the main hospital labs for processing, they also deliver urgent blood and other items to local hospitals.
They will also be undertaking the delivery of samples to test centres for the testing of COVID-19. The Lions chose to support them, as it is a much needed service in the local rural area.
Launceston Lions president Linda said: “This is a significant sum of money that we are putting to good use straight away. This Coronavirus pandemic is hurting lots of local people in lots of different ways — just because we are all social distancing doesn’t stop us from caring — we are doing what we can, and this cash injection will help us do more.”
When a humanitarian crisis strikes, the Lions Clubs Foundation of the British Isles works with and are guided by their own Lions members who are ordinary people actively working at the heart of their communities.
