A PUB chain is not set to open a site in Launceston.
After the town centre’s White Hart Hotel went on the market, local residents took to social media with suggestions as to what the pub could become.
Many suggested the hotel could house a Wetherspoon — a national chain that was founded in 1979, but a spokesperson from the company told the Post that Wetherspoon would not be taking on the pub.
The chain reportedly spent £2.1-million redeveloping the Queen’s Head Hotel in Tavistock, which opened as Wetherspoon in 2015.
There was a reported £3-million investment by the firm into the White Hart Hotel at Okehampton, which opened to the public last year.
A spokesperson from the estates team at Wetherspoon said: “Our surveyors are already aware of the site and have had a feasibility carried out on this property. Unfortunately, the development costs proved to be too expensive to make this a viable site for us to consider.”
Rachel Slater, one of the managers of the White Hart Hotel in Launceston, said: “It’s business as normal. We’re not closing anything. We’re still taking on events, and the bar is still open, and food available.”
