An evening of mayors took place in Launceston Town Hall on Friday, March 15 with representatives from Launceston, Wadebridge, Camelford, Redruth, St Austell and Liskeard.

The evening was in aid of raising money for St Petroc’s charity for the homeless in Cornwall.

The performers, being mayors, deputies and councillors from a variety of towns, were asked to come up with a variety act to present to the paying audience. Many chose to perform a poetry recital or a music performance, for example Launceston’s mayor banded together 12 of the town’s councillors to form ‘Launceston Town Council Choir’. Mayor Margaret young said: “I think our performance was quite a success!

“It was a very pleasant, light-hearted evening raising money for St Petroc’s and it definitely brought some people out of their comfort zones!”

Cllr Young was involved in organising the evening and explained the great work that the charity does across the county. She said: “St Petroc’s does an amazing job, no one wants to find themselves living on the streets and they are amazing at supporting people living in Cornwall.”

Just recently the charity were left a house in Liskeard, donated by someone who recently passed away and St Petroc’s are currently in the process of getting it finished, to make it available for a family to move in.

Also in attendance was Camelford’s acting mayor, Claire Hewlett, who recently commended the evening at a town council meeting. She said: “There were very nice pasties!

“It was a very pleasant evening and I think whoever is the mayor next year should attend because it’s important to support these things.”

Launceston’s Cllr Young used one of her five free bookings of the hall for the charity, as well as donating pasties to be had at the interval. She added: “Everything on the night was for profit, so we hope that they raised a really good amount from it.”
