A LAUNCESTON girl has been nominated for Best Female Vocal at this year's British Blues Awards.
Becca Langsford, originally from Launceston, moved to Plymouth three years ago to study history at university.
Having grown up with music, Becca took up singing blues music professionally. She said: "I have been singing blues music for a long time; my dad was a blues harmonica player in Plymouth-based band 'The Legal Eagles' and my brothers are all musicians too, so I grew up in a very musical household!"
When Becca moved to Plymouth, she was invited to sing with Vince Lee, a well-known and highly respected blues guitarist/vocalist.
She explained how she was nominated for the award: "I began to perform with him regularly at gigs, at first with his band 'The Big Combo' and later with his internationally-acclaimed band 'The Wildcards'.
"In 2009 I was invited to record on The Wildcards' latest album 'When The Moon Shines Bright' which was released in February this year. As well as doing backing vocals, I also recorded the lead vocal for one of the songs featured on the album. It was through the Wildcards that I found out about the British Blues Awards, as they were encouraging people to nominate them for Best Album category."
Becca continued: "When the final nominations were announced at the end of May, between us we'd been nominated in several other categories, such as Best Female Vocalist and Best Guitarist. The final stage of the awards is also a public vote, so we're appealing to everyone for their support and votes!"
The group want to raise awareness for blues music in the South West, and to promote what they're doing, as they are all involved with several different bands and projects.
The nominations that the group have received are: Becca Langsford — Best Female Vocal; The Wildcards — Best Album; The Wildcards — Best Band; Vince Lee — Best Guitarist; Vince Lee — Best Male Vocal; Kevin Crowe — Best Drummer; Al Wallis — Best Bass Player.
