Due to a number of 'life changes,' Launceston firefighter Richard Parish has decided to hang up his hose and retire from the brigade after 11 years. After losing his full-time member of staff, Richard will now be concentrating on running his shop, David Parish Menswear in The Square, offering a customer focussed and professional service. Richard recalled some memorable moments during his time as a firefighter, such as the Budehaven School fire and the blaze at the Oxfam shop in Launceston. He was one of the six firefighters that was airlifted to hospital after the fire engine rolled when it hit black ice on the dual carriageway in November 2005. One of his biggest regrets was not witnessing the height of the Boscastle flooding in August 2004. Richard told the 'Post': "I found the fire service to be a very satisfying part time career and will miss it. If there's anybody who has got the opportunity to give a little back to the community, being a retained firefighter is a very worthwhile occupation. I shall be sorry to be leaving, as after the last 11 years I have gained many friends at the station. It's been a privilege to work with such a dedicated team that care for the community we live in." Launceston Station Officer Gary Chapman explained that with the departure of Richard, the Launceston brigade are one under strength, so they hope to recruit a new member in the new year. If anyone is interested in becoming a retained firefighter, please either pop into the station or visit the Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service website for further details. S/O chapman said: "Richard will be a hard act to follow and to replace. He's given extremely good service and will be missed." The Launceston firefighters had a small leaving celebration to wish Richard well and he was presented with a photograph of Launceston Fire Brigade to mark the occasion by S/O Chapman.

PARTING GIFT: Richard Parish was presented with a photograph of Launceston Fire Brigade by Station Officer Gary Chapman.
