A LAST gasp goal put the mockers on Callington's hopes of gaining the runners-up spot in Division Five and so Southgate did local rivals North Petherwin a big favour! writes Kevin Hoare.
Callington started very well having a golden opportunity to score in the first few seconds through Lucas Skop, but then Southgate had the better of the game for the next 20 minutes. Kane Wilson hit the crossbar with a header just before half time as Southgate were caught napping at a free kick, Callington also hit the bar from a free kick.
Early in the second half Kane outstripped the home defence to put Callington ahead, but he was also guilty of missing two very good chances which would have given Callington a victory and runners-up position.
In the dying moments of the game Southgate were awarded a free kick and Kenny Channing put the ball into the 'mixer' and up popped Russell Pugsley to score his second goal in two weeks and clinch a point for the home side but more importantly deny Callington the victory they needed.
So Southgate's season ended on an upward spiral, having just been reformed this season to finish in fifth place is a good achievement as Duchy Five can be a difficult division to gain success.
