THE last service in St Julitta’s Church at Lanteglos by Camelford was almost a year ago on Remembrance Sunday.
Now, a year later, on Sunday, November 10, the church will re-open for the Remembrance service with Camelford Town Band. The wreath laying will start at 10.30am.
During the restoration several interesting findings were made, but also more rotten rafters than were expected and the project has cost £90,000 more than the expected £500,000.
The project has been supported with grants from heritage funders such as the Lottery and Cornwall Historic Churches Trust, together with generous donations from local people and well wishers from far and wide. The Friends of Lanteglos Church continue to manage the project which now has four further stages to complete — a kitchenette, a composting toilet, the six bells and the medieval windows for which further funding is still needed.
The contractor Jonnie Starr on the right of the pinnacle and his friend Pete have just completed their excellent work on the restoration — including at the very top of the town more than 70ft above the ground. This was all made possible by the massive scaffolding both inside and outside the church.
Mike Silver, the well known singer-songwriter and his friends, will celebrate the completion of the first stage of the restoration with a concert at St Julitta’s on November 22 at 7.30pm (tickets on the door). Then on November 30 there will be an open day with music, an exhibition, refreshments and talks between 11am and 4pm.
Johnny Cowling will make his usual appearance on December 8 at 7.30pm. And finally, the church will be formally re-opened by the Bishop of Truro and the Archdeacon of Bodmin on March 22, 2020. Check out the website for more photos and details, www.lanteglosbycamelfordchurch.com
