A CORNISH language expert believes only time will tell if the decision to award Cornwall national minority status results in an upturn in people studying its heritage and values. The Cornish people responded jubilantly to the decision last week, but Jerry Jefferies believes for the culture to thrive, a 'wall of indifference' must be broken down. He began learning the Cornish language and studying its history when posted at RAF St Mawgan, during which time he said he became aware of how neglected these aspects of Cornwall's identity were, and how much these needed teaching. Jerry, who has been teaching Cornish since qualifying in 2001 and runs classes in Nanpean, Bodmin, Wadebridge, Camelford and Bude, said: "The language is central to the culture, as is every other part of the culture — dance, music, cuisine — all have the potential to utilise the language in their expression."
