CAMELFORD Town Council have stated that they are opposed to the removal of pay phones at Trevia and Trewalder.

North Cornwall District Council have been consulting councils regarding the possible plans by BT to remove a number of pay phones, and at the full council meeting on October 21, councillors discussed the two pay phones and another on private land in the area.

The Mayor of Camelford, Cllr Brian Lush, said with regards to the pay phone in Trevia, it was located on a public footpath and mobile phone reception in the area was nil.

Cllr Andy Shaw added: "We should keep these smaller community telephones. If there's not much reception it's essential we keep these things here. They're there for a purpose."

Cllr Rob Rotchell said mobile phone reception in Cornwall was generally pretty poor and added: "It just seems to be reducing the public services in the rural areas and it's not good enough."

The councillor received a letter from Mr John Hough from Trevia who called for the retention of the phone boxes.

Cllr Rotchell proposed that the council oppose the removal of the phone boxes. Seven councillors voted in favour and one against.
