"A COMPLETE team performance" was the comment of Cornish All Blacks director of rugby Jon Hill after this victory but he was not happy about the failure to get a four try bonus point!

The All Blacks' pack were dominant throughout. In addition, the All Blacks backs were really on form too, recycling and retaining the ball and putting together some really magical passing moves.

Within five minutes the All Blacks opened the scoring when they were awarded a penalty for offside 25 metres out which fly half Tony Yapp converted. The Yorkshiremen soon countered and won a penalty against the run of play which their flyhalf Mark Bedworth landed to level the score.

This proved to be only a hiccough and the All Blacks increased their all round dominance camping on the home line for minutes at a time, winning line-outs taking early ball, and mounting rolling mauls for yards at a time. One of these brought a try touched down by every improving No 8 Sam Hocking.

Despite the All Blacks dominating they found themselves 9-8 down at the interval. In the 24th minute their lock Ben Hilton received a yellow card, this time for a reckless challenge: and the second quarter developed into a rather scrappy and querulous period during which Wharfedale won another penalty, this time for off side, which Bedworth kicked to narrow it to two points; and a bit of a fracas four minutes before half time ended with another penalty award to the home team which the reliable Bedworth again kicked to give them the one point interval advantage.

The All Blacks kicked off the second half really meaning business. Wharfedale fumbled and knocked on 15 metres from their line and from the scrum the All Blacks pack went on a roll, rucking and mounting unstoppable driving mauls which saw them over the line for Hocking to touch down his second score. Yapp converted and the All Blacks were leading 15-9.

Much of the play was now in the home half with the All Blacks clearly dictating proceedings and in the 58th minute when Wharfedale went offside under pressure Yapp kicked another excellent penalty as the Cornishmen began to pull away.

Perhaps the best move of the day came in the 66th minute - a fantastic handling move from halfway with all the backs interpassing and reverse passing magically with the kind of quality and confidence not often seen, and skipper and centre Mal Roberts took the scoring pass wide out for a superb try and Yapp added another two points.

The All Blacks went for the fourth try. They put Wharfedale under huge pressure, but to give the Yorkshiremen their deserved due they maintained a really dogged defence to keep the visitors at bay and, as a consolation, bagged an interception in their own half and replacement centre Simon Horsfall shot away on a solo run to touch down. Bedworth's conversion surprisingly failed.
